“Thresholds of Change: The Spiritual Journey of Replacing Doors in a Home”

A unique energy is inherent in a door—something most people probably never think about. Consider how often we open and close doors daily; it's a routine activity we perform without much thought. However, this seemingly mundane action holds significant meaning. Doors serve as gateways; their energy symbolizes passage, privacy, and, most excitingly, possibility.

In our latest interior design project, we were tasked with replacing nearly every door in a charming home filled with warmth and adorned with beautiful art, photographs, and books. At first glance, it was clear that this house was well-loved, with each piece carefully chosen.

What initially seemed like a straightforward renovation soon revealed itself to be about more than just wood, hardware, and hinges; it was about transformation—of space, self, and spirit. It would be a journey of a more profound significance yet to reveal itself entirely.

The Door as a Portal

Doors serve as powerful thresholds, marking the space between one experience and another. In spiritual traditions worldwide, thresholds hold deep significance—moments of pause, decision, and movement. Changing a door is not just a design update; it’s a declaration: "I am ready for what’s next."

When I first met the lovely homeowner, I sensed her embrace of transition. This season of growth inspired her to make her home reflect who she is becoming, not just who she has been. These doors symbolize a transformative passageway into her present and future self.

Design with Intention

We approached the door replacement with reverence and intentionality. No longer would these thresholds be ignored or purely utilitarian. Each door became a story—a gentle invitation into the next room, the next chapter.

We chose a three-panel shaker door adorned with a Venetian bronze egg-shaped door knob. The number three represents balance and harmony between body, mind, and spirit, as well as the past, present, and future. Three represents manifestation.  Creation, growth, and expansion are also connected to the number three. Bronze, infused with copper, evokes the essence of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. This magnificent metal symbolizes creative, sensual energy and a grounded, protective quality, inspiring us to embrace our artistic spirit and protect what we hold dear.

The Ritual of Transition

With every door removed, we paused. There is something sacred about deconstruction. As we lifted the old frames and hinges, we honored all that had passed through them—childhood laughter, difficult conversations, stolen quiet moments, joyful times, and the flow of each day, both mundane and exhilarating. Awaiting the new doors, the home took a deep breath, ready for a new chapter.

When we honor transition, both functionally and spiritually, everything changes. The rooms feel renewed, and the energy shifts. Once steeped in nostalgia, the home stands poised to embrace the future.

Walking Through

This project reminded me of something profound: our spaces are extensions of our inner lives. When we intentionally change our surroundings, we permit ourselves to evolve. We transform renovations into rituals and make the ordinary feel sacred.

So, the next time you open a door—really open it—take a moment to feel its weight, listen to its sound, and appreciate the moment it creates. Consider what you are walking away from and what you are walking toward.
